tippetariuswrites: Mehra (my Breton Dragonborn from Skyrim) (Mehra)

If Mehra has an instrumental theme song, it's "Frostfall" by EvilBlueKoala. Really it's the Dragonborn theme, but softer and gentler. Sometimes the melody takes a turn that's almost foreboding, but mostly it feels wistful, yet hopeful.

EvilBlueKoala's Additional Music Project is one of my favorite Skyrim mods. I highly recommend it if you want more music that feels like it could have been part of original soundtrack.

Bardcore Music

A friend introduced me to "bardcore," a music genre where people do Medieval-style covers of pop songs. And right now I can't seem to get enough of the Medievalized versions of "Jolene" and "All Star."

Ultima VII Nostalgia

Got all nostalgic listening to this classical guitar (and ocarina!) cover of the Stones song from the Ultima series.

I spent hours playing Ultima VII, though I'm pretty sure I never actually completed the game. Mostly I remember my Avatar baking bread, gathering chicken eggs, changing diapers, turning lights on and off, eating pastries, buying useless antiques, and playing a carnival game over and over trying to win a stuffed dragon. Of course there were Very Important Quests too, with lots of cool places to explore and plenty of things to kill (if they didn't kill you first), but the real fun was in discovering all the little ways you could interact with the world. For a game that's nearly three decades old, it was ahead of its time.

Lonesome Dreams by Lord Huron is another song I've started associating with Rumarin. The narrator describes traveling through a beautiful but lonely world "where the only souls I see are ghosts"; it feels like something Rumarin might experience when he's alone in a land that's new and unknown to him. I believe he came to Skyrim to run away from his troubles in Cyrodiil, but the ghosts of his old life still follow him.

I see Rumarin as a lonely person. Even when he has companions, he keeps them at arm's length and never lets them know who he really is. Ask him a question, and you're lucky if he gives you a real answer; most likely he'll deflect or make a joke. At first it seems all in good fun, but sooner or later people begin picking up on the pattern. They start finding Rumarin tiring, annoying, or even suspicious. Eventually they go their own way, and Rumarin finds himself alone once again. Rumarin knows he's trapped in a cycle of his own making, but he doesn't know how to break out of it. Sometimes he's not sure if he wants to.

Sometimes Mudwell's reincarnation song from Fraggle Rock gets stuck in my head:

Feel the water flowing
Feel it coming, feel it going
In the river, in the rain, or in the sky
One day it's an ocean
One day ice in motion
One day it's a tear drop in your eye

Once I wasn't here
And then I suddenly appeared
And now I seem to be at home in earth and air
Just like water flowing
I know where I'm going
Look beneath your boots and I'll be there

It's just a dream away
You've got leave to stay
We'll meet again someday
Just a dream away

As fun and lighthearted as Fraggle Rock was, it also touched on some pretty heavy subjects, including loss, death, and grief. But underneath was always a sense of hope and optimism that never cheapened the darker realities of life. Which is probably part of why Fraggle Rock is still one of my favorite shows.

Sometimes I feel weird about choosing music to add to my Kyne's Gift playlist, especially when it comes to pieces that are classic and widely known. Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas is autobiographical and expresses something personal about the song writer. Over the years many other people have formed their own relationship with the song and attached their own meaning to it.

Knowing that, it feels a bit presumptuous to come along and say, hey, this reminds me of a character in this fanfic I wrote. Still, it's true-- it makes me think of J'zargo. Like the narrator, J'zargo tried to convince everyone that he was clever and wise and destined for greatness. Then his image of himself was altered forever.

My Silver Lining by First Aid Kit blends fear and pain with hope. It's a song about not giving up, about keeping on even when the way is hard.

I associate My Silver Lining with Mehra because she's a stubborn optimist. That doesn't mean she refuses to see the bad in the world-- she has known sorrow and loss. But Mehra doesn't lose hope. When the world is cruel and pushes her down, she picks herself back up again, and again, and again. And she believes in helping others do the same.

I love this cover of True Colours by Marina and the Diamonds; it's serene and beautiful.

The song is on my Mehra playlist because Mehra tends to look for the best in people.

Most of the time when I'm writing, I listen to instrumental music (lyrics usually just distract me). But every now and then I go back to one of the white noise generators at myNoise.net. My favorite combo is Ice World and Northern Lights, but there are tons of others that capture a particular mood or atmosphere. Rain, Gregorian chants, wind chimes, bird calls, medieval village noises-- that's not even scratching the surface.
tippetariuswrites: J'zargo (follower from Skyrim) (J'zargo)

In The White Phial, J'zargo swaggers and talks big. J'zargo has much skill! J'zargo knows many things! J'zargo will be a great mage! But lurking behind that bravado is a lot of fear and insecurity. Deep down, J'zargo is terrified that everything his father said about him is true-- that he's useless and won't amount to anything.

White Winter Hymnal is one of my favorite songs by Fleet Foxes. It ran through my head while I worked on the first two chapters of TOTW, where Mehra and Rumarin spend a lot of time slogging through snow. I also started associating the song with Rumarin, because they're both ambiguous, and they're both potentially darker than they might at first seem.

Broken by Lovelytheband: Official video and lyrics-only version

A song about broken people finding each other and learning how to cope together-- I wish I'd discovered this when I was still writing The White Phial.

In a way the damaged phial is a metaphor for the main characters, who are all a little broken for one reason or another. Individually they may never be quite whole, but together maybe they can grow past that and become something more.
