Sunshine Challenge 2020: Prompt 5 - Blue

This prompt for the Sunshine Challenge is blue.

I have just one answer this time: Sonic the Hedgehog.

My favorite Sonic games were the early ones for the Sega Genesis console, mostly Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. I remember discovering that if you leave Sonic alone for a while, he turns his head, glares at you, and taps his foot impatiently-- and if you walk him up to an edge, he wobbles and flails for balance. Cute little touches like that made him more real for me.

For a while I was into the Sonic the Hedgehog Saturday morning cartoon (SatAM), and I collected the Archie Sonic comics. It's been a loooong time since I've even played a Sonic game, but I absolutely love the intro animation for Sonic Mania. So bright and colorful and boppy and full of nostalgic vibes.

Cool! I should just buy Sonic Mania and give it a try. I don't game near as much as I used to, but I've watched that video enough that I feel like I ought to support the effort.

Oh yeah I can relate to that, I’ve been a fail at gaming myself💙 have you seen the sonic film? I’ve not seen it yet myself and I’m curious

Not yet! I'm curious too, especially since they held off on releasing it so they could make Sonic look more like himself. I'm not so enthusiastic about a Sonic story that takes place on Earth, but if Sonic feels more or less right and Jim Carrey does a good take on Eggman, it might be worth seeing.

I always wanted to play Sonic, but my brother preferred Nintendo so that's what we ended up with :(

I know more people who had Nintendo or PlayStation growing up, so I feel like I missed out on other cool games and characters. Donkey Kong, Pokemon, and Crash Bandicoot, to name a few. But I guess we can't have it all!

It's like seeing an old friend. It cracks me up when I remember that Sonic's classic look was based on Mickey Mouse, but he was still cool!

I was so bummed when my Genesis stopped working. Good times indeed, though! Sonic, Ecco the Dolphin, Lion King, etc.

Oh, you just listed several of the games I enjoyed on it. (^^) I got the Sega Mini because it came with so many of the ones I enjoyed (Sonic, Ecco, Vectorman, Comix Zone, etc.) even though our Genesis is still working. (^^)"

Ohh yeah, now I remember seeing a review about the Sega Mini, and it looked cool. Thanks for that reminder, I have to look into that again!

This is a good choice for this colour! I don't have any nostalgia or memories for Sonic since I've never played a game and only seen some of the recent Sonic Boom cartoon, but for some reason, I'm quite fond of this hedgehog and his friends. Something about this franchise just gives off a feel-good vibe that I like a lot. Perhaps the insults some people would have toward the character and his recent games made me root for him instead. I have an interest in playing some games and watching the movie one day.

Have you ever heard of the Sonic the Hedgehog real-time fandubs that Snapcube on Youtube did? I assume you haven't. It's the cutscenes of the 3D games with adlib over them where they dub the characters and create a new comedic story. In my opinion, they're very funny! You can definitely tell the voice actors are having fun. Other than lets plays, this is the closest thing I've gotten to actually experiencing the games lol.

Sonic has a very distinct look, and he gives off a fun vibe. But you'd probably have to work hard to make a blue hedgehog the opposite of fun and whimsical!

Ah, much nostalgia for the Sonic games, and for learning that the voice of the SatAM animated Sonic was also Steve Urkel on a different show of the same time. I have Sonic Mania, I should probably catch it at some point and play, but I have so little time and so many things to do.

I can't remember how I learned that Jaleel White played both Steve Urkel and Sonic the Hedgehog, but it blew my mind as a kid. It definitely raised his cool factor for me. Sonic has had other good voice actors, but the Sonic in my head will always have Jaleel White's voice.

Mine, too. And once I knew, I could hear the delivery, especially on "chili dogs", and that made it very cool to do.
